Practice Test 2 - Question commentary

Question 1

Instructions

You are stopped.
You wish to turn right at the intersection.
There are no other vehicles or pedestrians on your left or right.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when it would be safe to go.

Setting

You are waiting to turn right across a broken line into a side street. There are two oncoming vehicles and you must respond when it is safe to make the turn.

Response

This question frustrates many users as it is easy to disagree with the answer. The correct response according to the website is no response. This is what you must do to allow the test to continue.

However, drivingtestnsw.com believes there are two opportunities to respond that would result in safe completion of the right turn.

The first possibility is at the start of the clip before the first vehicle reaches you. There is more than enough time to make the turn and this should be a correct answer.

The second possibility is after both of the oncoming vehicles have passed. There are a few seconds after the second car leaving plenty of time for a response. In this situation there is no more oncoming traffic so the turn would once again be safe

Question 2

Instructions

You are stopped.
You wish to turn right at the intersection.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when it would be safe to go.

Setting

You want to turn right at a set of traffic lights that control a busy intersection. You do not have a dedicated green arrow and must wait for a safe break in traffic to make the turn. There is a vehicle in the same situation on the opposite side of the intersection attempting to turn in front of you.

Response

While the vehicle is waiting to make its turn you cannot proceed safely as you do not have sufficient visibility to ensure the turn will be safe. On top of this, there are no gaps in oncoming traffic that would allow for a safe turn. As such, the correct answer is not to respond – just let the clip play until it is complete.

Question 3

Instructions

You are stopped.
You wish to turn right at the intersection.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when it would be safe to go.

Setting

You want to turn right at a set of traffic lights. At the start of the clip, the traffic lights are red and you cannot make the turn. When the lights are green, you do not have a dedicated green arrow and must wait for a safe break in traffic to make the turn.

Response

There are no gaps in oncoming traffic that would allow for a safe turn. As such, the correct answer is not to respond – just let the clip play until it is complete.

Question 4

Instructions

You are travelling along a two-way road in a 80km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when you would slow down.

Setting

You are travelling 80km/h along a country road with a broken line that allows overtaking. When the clip begins, you can see some oncoming traffic in the distance. As the clip progresses you see an oncoming vehicle move into your lane to overtake another oncoming vehicle.

Response

The correct answer is to respond when you see the oncoming vehicle move into your lane.

Question 5

Instructions

You are travelling along a two-way road in a 100km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when you would slow down.

Setting

You are travelling 90km/h along a road at night. You can see vehicles ahead of you in your lane, though they are some distance away. There is oncoming traffic and the headlights are quite bright. You pass a warning sign on the left hand side of the road that indicates the upcoming left hand bend should be taken at or below 55km/h.

Response

The correct answer is to respond when you see the warning sign or very soon after you pass it. Leaving the response too long after you pass the sign will be a bad response.

Question 6

Instructions

You are travelling along a two-way road in a 60km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when it would be safe to overtake.

Setting

You are travelling 60km/h along an unmarked country road that is bending to the right. You are following two cyclists. When the clip starts there is no oncoming traffic but an oncoming vehicle passes as you go around the bend.

Response

As you go around the bend you are turning blind and have no idea if there is oncoming traffic. This means there are no points at which it is safe to overtake the cyclists. The correct answer is not to respond – just let the clip play until it is complete.

Question 7

Instructions

You are travelling along a two-way road in a 60km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when you would slow down.

Response

The correct answer is to respond when you notice the vehicle is indicating to its intention to turn right as this will result in it slowing down.
