Practice Test 3 - Question commentary

Question 1

Instructions

You are travelling along a two-way road in a 50km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when you would slow down.

Setting

You are moving along a suburban street with an oncoming vehicle. Although your focus is drawn to the oncoming vehicle, a truck will begin to reverse out of a driveway on the left hand side of the street. As the clip progresses, the oncoming vehicle will swerve in front of you to avoid a parked car.

Response

The correct answer is to respond as soon as you see the vehicle reversing from the driveway.

Question 2

Instructions

You are stopped.
You wish to turn right at the intersection.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when it would be safe to go.

Setting

You want to turn right at a set of traffic lights that control a busy intersection. You do not have a dedicated green arrow and must wait for a safe break in traffic to make the turn. There is a vehicle in the same situation on the opposite side of the intersection attempting to turn in front of you.

Response

While the vehicle is waiting to make its turn you cannot proceed safely as you do not have sufficient visibility to ensure the turn will be safe. As such, the correct answer is not to respond – just let the clip play until it is complete.

Question 3

Instructions

You are stopped.
You wish to turn right at the intersection.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when it would be safe to go.

Setting

You want to turn right at a set of traffic lights that control a busy intersection. You must wait for a safe break in traffic to make the turn. There is oncoming traffic, all of which passes straight through the intersection.

Response

There are no gaps in oncoming traffic that would allow for a safe turn. As such, the correct answer is not to respond – just let the clip play until it is complete.

Question 4

Instructions

You are travelling along a two-way road in a 80km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when you would slow down.

Setting

You are travelling 80km/h along a country road with a broken line that allows overtaking. When the clip begins, you see some oncoming traffic appear in the distance. As the clip progresses you see an oncoming vehicle move into your lane to overtake another oncoming vehicle.

Response

The correct answer is to respond when you see the oncoming vehicle move into your lane. The clip ends shortly after the vehicle moves out to overtake. As such, it is important you are focused and do not hesitate when responding.

Question 5

Instructions

You are travelling along a two-way road in a 50km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when you would slow down.

Setting

You are travelling at 50km/h along a suburban street. Eventually the street bends to right.

Response

The correct answer is to respond when you notice you are coming up to a bend and will need to slow down.

Question 6

Instructions

You are travelling along a two-way road in a 50km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when it would be safe to overtake.

Setting

You are travelling at 30km/h along a main street following two cyclists. There are double unbroken lines and an island for pedestrians to cross when safe.

Response

There are no points at which it is safe to overtake the cyclists. The correct answer is not to respond – just let the clip play until it is complete.

Question 7

Instructions

You are stopped.
You wish to turn right at the intersection.
Click the 'RESPOND NOW' button when it would be safe to go.

Setting

You want to turn right at a set of traffic lights. At the start of the clip, the traffic lights are red and you cannot proceed. When the lights are green, you do not have a dedicated green arrow and must wait for a safe break in traffic to make the turn.

Response

When the light is green, there are no gaps in oncoming traffic that would allow for a safe turn. As such, the correct answer is not to respond – just let the clip play until it is complete. This clip seems to test if you’re paying attention to the red light that makes responding for the majority of the clip illegal.
